Emergency Aid

Famine, drought disasters and the consequences of civil war. The Ethiopian population is currently facing challenges and hardship at various levels. Emergency aid is not one of our core tasks, but we are doing our best to help in cases of need around the SELAM locations.

Emergency aid campaign 2024

The management of SELAM Wukro Children's Village, in cooperation with Birhan Bank, carried out an emergency aid campaign in May 2024 to support the local population around Wukro in the Dengolo region. Most of the inhabitants are small farmers whose harvest depends on the rainy season. In recent years, the region has experienced several periods of drought and the harvests were not sufficient to provide for the inhabitants and generate income. They are supported with 15 kg of grain per month by a “Food Security Program”. The civil war added further challenges, such as high inflation, and this support was also cut off, leaving the residents to fight for their survival every month. With the emergency aid campaign amounting to CHF 200,000, we were able to support 8,125 residents with a financial boost and procure baby food for 75 babies. The aim is for the Food Security Program to take over again soon.
